Description

Quick answer: Heavy tee hinges are long, reinforced face-fixing hinges for larger or heavier timber gates and substantial shed doors. They spread the load further across the gate than light or medium tee hinges.

What are heavy tee hinges used for?

The vertical leaf fixes to the post or frame and the long strap fixes across a solid gate ledge or framed door. Use them where an ordinary lightweight hinge would be undersized, but a separate hook-and-band system is not required.

  • Supplied as a pair for one suitable gate or door.
  • Long strap helps support a wider section of the timber construction.
  • Suitable for robust garden gates, ledged doors and similar exterior joinery.
  • Black and galvanised options are available on selected sizes.

What else do I need?

Fit into a sound gate post or structural frame using suitable exterior fixings. Complete the gate with a ring latch, Suffolk latch or automatic latch. An automatic latch needs a separate pull handle. Add a Brenton bolt for extra restraint.

Alternatives

Medium tee hinges are usually sufficient for an ordinary lightweight garden gate. For wider, heavier or more adjustable installations, use straight hook and band hinges. The Gate Set A packages heavy tee hinges with a ring latch and Brenton bolt.

Before ordering: Hinge length alone does not determine capacity. Consider the gate's width, weight, framing, wind exposure, post condition and fixings. Position the straps over solid ledges or framing; do not rely on thin cladding boards to carry the gate.

Compare tee hinges with hook and band hinges.
